Lock the roster or leave it open
You are the third volunteer coordinator, asked by Saskia and Satyam to settle how the shared roster is edited.
In a church hall office, Saskia and Satyam, fellow volunteer coordinators, stand over a laptop showing the shared roster. Last weekend two shift swaps overwrote each other, and a stall went unstaffed. They have each asked you to decide today.
The scene
Saskia: Two swaps overwrote each other and a stall sat empty. Only coordinators should edit this.
Satyam: We field every swap request, and volunteers wait days. Let them swap.
Saskia: Waiting beats an empty stall. Most of our volunteers aren't careful with spreadsheets.
Satyam: Locking punishes everyone for one mistake. We've split this evenly, so you decide.
The two questions
- 1What would you decide about the roster, and what would you say to Saskia and Satyam?
- 2How do you decide when a shared system should be tightly controlled and when it should stay flexible?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
