Paper under every door
You have just joined the board of the co-op building where you live.
It is your first board meeting, held in the lobby. The bylaws say every announcement goes on paper under each door, a rule adopted after residents missed a water shutoff that was only emailed. Last week the paper notice about a boiler repair reached people two days late. Lucia and Brigitte, both long-serving on the board, disagree about what to do.
The scene
Lucia: A group chat reaches everyone in seconds. Paper took two days last week.
Brigitte: Everyone with a smartphone. Six of our older residents don't have one.
Lucia: So we keep sixty households waiting for six? Do both, then.
Brigitte: Both means the chat becomes the real one. We need a third vote, newcomer.
The two questions
- 1What would you say at your first meeting, and how would you vote?
- 2Describe a time you were new to a group and were asked to take a side between people who had been there much longer.
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
