Scene to read · Collaboration, Equity

A raised-hand queue

You host the weekly video call for a volunteer team building a free online coding tutorial site.

Today Valeria and Obinna, who uses a mobility scooter, joined the call from your home office, and it has just ended. Obinna, the team's most experienced contributor, did most of the talking; three remote members said nothing. The site is due to launch in six weeks.

The scene

Valeria: Three people haven't spoken in a month. Start a raised-hand queue, and mute interruptions.

Obinna: I interrupt because we launch in six weeks. Queues turn decisions into seminars.

Valeria: Dee wrote the whole search page and didn't say a word about it.

Obinna: Then I'll ask Dee directly. But muting people? You host. Your call.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you run the next call, and what would you say to Valeria and Obinna?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to balance getting things done quickly with making sure everyone was heard.

What raters look for

Collaboration
Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
