Written scenario · Collaboration, Professionalism
A script or a feel for it
You have been asked to write the one-page guide for newcomers to your volunteer team.
The team takes turns answering questions at a hospital's information desk, and its two longest-serving members train newcomers in opposite ways. Bogdan hands each newcomer a word-for-word script and twelve standard answers; his trainees are consistent and rarely say anything wrong, but they sound stiff and freeze when a question is off the list. The other, a retired nurse, has newcomers shadow her and tells them to read the person; her trainees are warm and flexible, and no two of them say the same thing. One page cannot be both a script and a philosophy. The coordinator wants it Monday, and each expects it to describe their method.
The two questions
- 1How would you go about writing the guide, and what would you say to the two volunteers?
- 2When experienced people disagree about the right way to do a job, who should decide, and how?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
