Scene to read · Collaboration, Problem solving
Checked twice
You started three weeks ago in a hospital's laundry plant.
Shin, who has sorted linen here for decades, taught you the team's habit: skip the second count of each cart against its ward's order sheet so everything is loaded before the delivery trucks pull out. On Monday a ward received forty sheets too few. Today you counted every cart twice, and your line finished last. Yusuf, who runs the sorting room, walks in.
The scene
Yusuf: Ward six came up forty sheets short Monday. Today this line's last. Why?
Shin: Count twice, trucks leave late. Count once, wards get linen on time. Mostly.
Yusuf: Mostly isn't the rule, Shin. You're three weeks in, fresh eyes. What have you seen on this line?
The two questions
- 1How would you answer Yusuf, and why?
- 2Describe a time you were shown a shortcut by someone more experienced that you were not sure about. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
