Pool, bench, or beds?

You are a resident of the third household in a shared house, and your view will tip the decision about the backyard layout.

You are in the small shared backyard, beside a few plants and a sagging bench, with fellow residents Karima, 26, and Katinka, 39. Karima wants play space for her young child, who is elsewhere; her household can use the yard only on weekday afternoons, while Katinka's can use it only on weekends. Permanent vegetable beds would leave less open play space, so separate schedules won't resolve the layout conflict.

The scene

Karima: I'd like room for a paddling pool so my child can play.

Katinka: I'd like vegetable beds and somewhere quiet to sit on weekends.

Karima: Even packed away, the pool needs open space that beds would take.

Katinka: Could we mark out smaller versions before choosing what gets less space?

The two questions

  1. 1What layout or arrangement would you propose to Karima and Katinka, and how would you explain it to them?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you had to share limited space or resources with others. How did you handle it?

What raters look for

Collaboration
Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
