Keeping the snowblower shared
You are a neighbor who occasionally borrows Sigrid and Silvana's co-owned snowblower, and they have asked you to help resolve a repair-cost disagreement.
In their shared garage, Sigrid, 42, and Silvana, 55, discuss a $180 bill for replacing the snowblower's cracked belt. Sigrid paid most of the purchase price; Silvana stores, services and lends it to neighbors, but they never valued that work. Nobody knows whether borrowing accelerated the wear, and some neighbors rely on free access because they cannot afford their own machine.
The scene
Sigrid: I'd split repairs by purchase shares, but borrowers might've added some wear.
Silvana: I've handled storage and servicing; charging borrowers could stop neighbors using it.
Sigrid: Your work counts, but we never agreed how much offsets repair costs.
Silvana: You borrow it too; how would you share costs without closing access?
The two questions
- 1How would you help Sigrid and Silvana resolve the repair bill, considering their different contributions, continued neighborhood access and your own position as a borrower?
- 2Tell us about a time you had to work out a fair share of costs or effort with other people. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
