The third vote
You live in a shared house with two housemates, and the heating bill is divided among you.
It is the first cold week of winter. In the hallway by the thermostat, Sasha, who works from home, and Miriam, who is out all day and on a tight budget, are arguing about when the heating should be on.
The scene
Sasha: I work here nine hours a day. I can't type in gloves.
Miriam: Last month's bill was three hundred. My part's already more than I can cover.
Sasha: So I freeze so the bill looks nice? I'm paying for it too.
Miriam: And I pay for heat I'm not home for. You're the third vote.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Sasha and Miriam?
- 2Describe a time you helped people share something there was not enough of. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
