Scene to read · Collaboration, Empathy

Four trays short

You assemble patient meal trays in a hospital kitchen.

Nandini returned to the line last week after her husband's death and has left items off several patient trays today. At the busiest point of the midday service, Hugo, who checks trays at the end of the belt, walks up to where you and Nandini are working side by side.

The scene

Hugo: Nandini, four trays short since eleven. I think you should switch to dishes this week.

Nandini: Please, no. It's too quiet back there. Busy keeps me going.

Hugo: I get it, I do. But patients are getting incomplete meals.

Nandini: You stand next to me all shift. Do you think I should go?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Nandini and Hugo?
  2. 2Describe a time a teammate was struggling and it affected the group's work. What did you do?

What raters look for

Collaboration
