Scene to read · Communication, Empathy
A good teacher
You are a member of a neighborhood chess club, watching a game between two other members.
At your club, older members talk newcomers through their first games. Abeni, 79, has done it for thirty years; she taught you that way, and she says it is what gets her out of the house. Tonight, at the back table, she is playing Quentin, who joined last week, is Deaf, and asked for a teaching game. You are the only one watching.
The scene
Abeni: Knight's out too early, dear. You did sign up for a teaching game.
Quentin: I did. I just lose my place, reading your lips after every single move.
Abeni: Mistakes stick if we wait. Ask my old pupil here. Was I a good teacher?
Quentin: I'd like to know too. Is it me who should adjust?
The two questions
- 1How would you answer Abeni and Quentin?
- 2How do you tell someone that the way they like to help is not working for the person they are helping?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
