Her bio, our name
You are the volunteer who manages the public accounts of a community cycling club.
Outside the clubhouse, you sit at a picnic table with Fergus, the club's chair, and Ffion, a member. Ffion posts strong political opinions on her own account and lists the club in her biography. Some members and local sponsors have noticed, and you have been asked to recommend whether the club needs a rule.
The scene
Fergus: Sponsors ask if we share your views. I'd ban naming the club.
Ffion: These accounts are mine, Fergus. My bio only names my club.
Fergus: People see the club speaking. Sponsors rely on our political neutrality.
Ffion: Ask our volunteer: what protects members' speech and the club best?
The two questions
- 1What would you recommend to Fergus and Ffion, and how would you explain it to them?
- 2How do you decide when an organization should limit what its members say publicly?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
