Written scenario · Communication, Equity

Announced once, in English

You are riding a city bus across town on a route you know well.

The driver announces, once and quickly in English, that a road closure means the bus will skip several stops. You only half caught which ones. A few passengers clearly did not understand, among them Pilar, the woman beside you, who asked you earlier in careful English whether this bus goes to the clinic. A minute ago the driver, in heavy traffic, snapped at a rider who questioned him, and a sign asks passengers not to talk to him while the bus is moving. Others are watching and saying nothing. If you guess at the stops you may send Pilar the wrong way; pressing the driver could distract him.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and why?
  2. 2Describe a time you were unsure whether it was your place to speak up for someone else. What did you do?

What raters look for

Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
