Scene to read · Communication, Collaboration
Hands up, who's in?
You are the newest member of a neighborhood investment club.
You sit at one end of the meeting table with the chair, Rosalinda, and the most active member, Min-ho, while the other members settle in across the room, within earshot. The two propose moving sixty percent of the shared pool into one electric-vehicle company, which the club researched for six weeks before you joined. You think spreading the money out slowly would be safer, but you have not read their research.
The scene
Rosalinda: So, sixty percent into this one company. We're ready to vote, everybody?
Min-ho: Six weeks of research. Last year we were too careful and missed it twice.
Rosalinda: You've been quiet tonight. Any thoughts before we vote?
Min-ho: Unless it's new information, let's not reopen it. Hands up, who's in?
The two questions
- 1What would you do before the vote, and what would you say?
- 2When should the newest person in a group speak up against what everyone else seems to want?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
