The full story or the budget
You are the newly elected chair of a nonprofit food bank.
The former treasurer quietly took most of a large grant. The matter is with the authorities, and you must cut a quarter of the paid part-time staff. Half the board wants the full story told at an all-hands meeting. The other half wants a general budget explanation, fearing that donors will leave and that more jobs and food deliveries will be lost. Siti, a warehouse coordinator of six years who speaks English as a second language, is among those losing their jobs, and she has asked to meet you before the announcement.
The two questions
- 1How would you handle the announcement, and what would you say to Siti?
- 2Describe a time you had to deliver bad news to someone. How did you decide what to say and what to leave out?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
