Scene to read · Communication, Empathy

It looked strong

You volunteer as a homework tutor at a high school's after-school program.

You told a student, Min, that his history essay looked strong, and it came back with a C. You still think it was better than that, though you never saw the teacher's grading guide. After dismissal his father, Chul, walks into the homework help room. Your program coordinator, Mehdi, is standing beside you, listening.

The scene

Chul: You told my son it was strong. He stopped revising because of you.

Mehdi: Our tutors help with homework. Grades are between families and teachers.

Chul: Then email his teacher today and back a regrade. Was it a C to you?

Mehdi: We've never written to a teacher. I'd rather hear your answer first.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Chul?
  2. 2When you have given someone advice that turned out badly, how far does your responsibility for the result go?

What raters look for

Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
