Scene to read · Communication, Ethics

Whose words were those?

You are the volunteer secretary writing the minutes for your building's tenants' association.

After tonight's meeting, you review your notes in the association's meeting room with Lyra, 37, and Maarten, 50, both members. Your notes attribute a complaint about the tenant in 4B to Maarten, but he disputes the wording. The newsletter deadline is in twenty minutes; missing it means delaying all meeting updates until next week. The tenant named in the complaint reads the newsletter.

The scene

Lyra: I heard you say our neighbor ignores complaints, not just makes noise.

Maarten: I said complaints hadn't helped. That's different from saying someone ignores them.

Lyra: Members asked for this discussion on record. Leaving it out looks evasive.

Maarten: Can you publish the other updates while we check that passage first?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you handle the disputed passage and the newsletter deadline, and what would you say to Lyra and Maarten?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to communicate information when people disagreed about what had happened. How did you handle the uncertainty?
