Scene to read · Communication, Ethics
Half your class has them
You are a first-year law student studying for finals, which are graded on a curve.
In the law library reading room, your study partner Esther has brought over Aroha, a third-year student. Aroha is quietly selling copies of model exam answers that your professor gave to past classes and asked them not to pass on.
The scene
Esther: I bought a set yesterday. Professor Lin's own model answers. Get one.
Aroha: Twenty dollars. He asked us not to share, I know. Half your class has them.
Esther: The curve doesn't care why you didn't.
Aroha: And one complaint costs me my clerkship. So, yes or no?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Aroha and Esther?
- 2When you disagree with what someone is doing, how do you decide between saying nothing, telling them directly, and telling someone in authority?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
