Scene to read · Communication, Empathy
Calls only this hour
You are riding a long-distance train, seated between two strangers.
The coach is the one set aside for silence. Wanjiru has been on a video call for ten minutes, speaking softly in another language. Yolanda, who is in her seventies, has just leaned across to speak to her. The next stop is an hour away.
The scene
Yolanda: Excuse me. This is the quiet carriage. Could you please end your call?
Wanjiru: It's my mother, in a hospital back home. They only allow calls this hour.
Yolanda: I'm sorry. But a rule's a rule, and the vestibule's right there.
Wanjiru: The signal drops out there. You've heard me. Am I really that loud?
The two questions
- 1How would you respond to Wanjiru and Yolanda?
- 2Describe a time you were caught between two people who each had a reasonable point. What did you say?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
