Written scenario · Communication, Collaboration

The room went silent

You are an ordinary member of a community choir.

After rehearsal, the choir is voting on whether to spend this year's donations on new sheet music or on covering dues for members who cannot afford them. In the middle of the discussion, one singer tells Joanne, who has argued for the sheet music, that she is being selfish. The hall goes silent and Joanne looks at the floor. The chair, who is new, shuffles her papers and says nothing. You have no official role, you like both singers, and forty people are waiting to see what happens next.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and why?
  2. 2When is it better to address a hurtful comment in front of the group, and when is it better done privately?

What raters look for

Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
Collaboration
Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
