Seventy percent, but where?
You are the volunteer who tallied the survey, and you will prepare tonight's results slide.
In a community hall lined with survey posters, city planner Mircea and resident advocate Mireille review your tally for a proposed bus stop. Seventy percent of all respondents support it, but most households on the nearest blocks oppose it. The slide is yours to prepare.
The scene
Mircea: Seventy percent support is a strong, clear message at one glance.
Mireille: Not the families beside the stop. One number buries their opposition.
Mircea: A block-by-block table invites conflict; the project could stall a year.
Mireille: Or they feel tricked later. You tallied it; what's your slide?
The two questions
- 1What would you put on the slide, and what would you say to Mircea and Mireille?
- 2Tell us about a time you had to present information that was simple to state but incomplete. What did you decide to do?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
