The invitation promised more

You are the volunteer leader of a community hiking group, responsible for its hike plans and recruitment messages.

Before Saturday's hike, you're in the trailhead parking lot with Pippa, 25, a newer member, and Priam, 38, a veteran member. Hoping to attract more members, Pippa invited friends and advertised an unofficial faster option, assuming they could wait at junctions. The group advertises relaxed, inclusive hikes, and today's available volunteers can support only one group. Her friends are due shortly.

The scene

Pippa: I advertised a faster option because friends wouldn't join our slow hikes.

Priam: But we're offering one supported pace; our volunteers can't lead two groups.

Pippa: They're arriving expecting that option. Without something challenging, I'm considering leaving too.

Priam: I want them welcomed, not disappointed, but slow hikes are our purpose.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Pippa and Priam, and what would you tell the arriving newcomers about today's hike and future options?
  2. 2How should a community group communicate its limits while keeping enthusiastic members motivated to contribute?
