Scene to read · Communication, Ethics
Everybody copies the manual
You are a student in a trade school's auto repair program.
In the auto bay, beside a lifted sedan, your close friend Hanh is copying the factory manual's troubleshooting steps word for word into her graded diagnostic write-up, which is supposed to explain her own reasoning. Nikau, a classmate, is watching too.
The scene
Nikau: Relax, everybody copies the manual. It's the correct procedure. Why reword it?
Hanh: Exactly. I did the diagnosis myself. I just can't write it up as well.
Nikau: The instructor's never said a word to anyone about it.
Hanh: You're making a face. Do you think this is a problem? Be honest.
The two questions
- 1How would you answer Hanh, and why?
- 2When a friend asks for your honest opinion in front of someone else, how do you decide how much to say?
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
