Scene to read · Empathy, Professionalism

Still my ears

You book fittings at the front counter of a hearing aid clinic.

Thabo, 79, needs his new hearing aids adjusted and has come in with his son Takeshi, who drives him and has answered every question you've asked Thabo. The only afternoon openings this month are Thursdays, when Takeshi works; last month Thabo missed an appointment he'd booked himself. Thabo taps the counter and looks at you.

The scene

Takeshi: Just put Tuesday at nine. I work Thursdays, and I'm the one driving.

Thabo: I'm standing right here. Mornings I'm foggy. Thursday afternoon, please. I'll take the bus.

Takeshi: In our family, you don't send your father off on buses. That's respect.

Thabo: Respect is asking me. They're still my ears, son.

The two questions

  1. 1Which appointment would you book, and what would you say to Thabo and Takeshi?
  2. 2Describe a time someone spoke for another person in front of you, or for you. How did you respond?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Professionalism
