Scene to read · Empathy, Motivation
The donor who wants no mention
You are a parent volunteer helping set up chairs for a school parents' meeting, and the committee has asked you to make the final call on how this gift appears in the records.
In a side room before the meeting, treasurer Valentin is reviewing the trip account with Vasco, a parent donor. Vasco has quietly covered several families' trip fees and wants no mention. Valentin must present the accounts tonight and has asked you, as volunteer coordinator, to decide how the money is recorded.
The scene
Valentin: Vasco, parents will ask tonight where this unexplained income came from.
Vasco: Families would feel embarrassed. I'd rather stop giving than be named.
Valentin: Not families' names; I only need your gift in the records.
Vasco: Then it's up to our volunteer here. I'll accept whatever you decide.
The two questions
- 1What would you decide about how the gift is recorded, and how would you explain it to Valentin and Vasco?
- 2Tell us about a time you had to balance someone's privacy against the need for openness. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
