Six dollars in tips
You are a shift supervisor at a mid-size hotel.
Guests usually hand cash tips to the bell staff at the door; housekeepers rarely receive any. The general manager has asked you to recommend whether tips should be pooled. In the staff room, Dean, a bellhop, and Amara, a housekeeper, have heard about it.
What's said in the scene
Amara: I clean fourteen rooms a day. Last month I got six dollars in tips.
Dean: Guests tip the person they see. I earn that with every bag.
Amara: They'd see a dirty room quickly enough.
Dean: Pool it and I lose a third of my pay. What will you recommend?
The two questions
- 1What would you recommend, and how would you reach that decision?
- 2Why does some work get noticed and rewarded more than other work that matters just as much?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
