Stay behind

You are a parent volunteer on the planning committee for a Grade 7 class trip.

The committee meets in a classroom after school. The three-day trip to a science center costs $320 per student, and about a quarter of families have said they cannot pay. The class teacher, Ms. Reyes, and the committee chair are at the table with you.

What's said in the scene

Ms. Reyes: Students who aren't going will stay at school and do a worksheet package. That's how we've always done it.

Committee chair: We can't ask the other families to pay more. It's already expensive.

Committee chair: (to you) You look like you disagree. What do you think?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to the committee?
  2. 2Should schools offer activities that cost money if not every student can afford them? Explain.
