Just one exception
You are a teaching assistant who runs a weekly lab section in a first-year biology course.
You are in the professor's office with Eli, a student from your section. He has asked to write the lab exam on a different day because it falls on Yom Kippur, a Jewish holy day. The university calendar does not list the holiday.
What's said in the scene
Professor: If I let one student move the exam, I have to let everyone. It isn't fair to the other two hundred students.
Eli: I'm not asking for extra time. I just can't be here that day.
Professor: (to you) He's in your section. What do you think?
The two questions
- 1What would you say?
- 2How should schools and workplaces handle requests for exceptions based on religion or culture?
