Scene to read · Empathy, Communication

The billing number

You volunteer at the check-in desk of a physical therapy clinic with another volunteer, Tomasz.

Aylin, a client, has come to cancel her remaining sessions. Volunteers are told not to discuss treatment or bills, and you do not know whether the clinic offers any payment help. She lingers at the desk in the waiting area after Tomasz hands her a card.

The scene

Aylin: Six weeks, and my shoulder still hurts. I can't keep paying forty a visit.

Tomasz: That's the billing office number. They're really the ones who can answer that.

Aylin: I called them twice. I think I should just stop coming. Shouldn't I?

Tomasz: We honestly can't say. We're only volunteers. Is there anything else today?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Aylin, and what would you do next?
  2. 2Tell us about a time someone needed more from you than your role allowed you to give. What did you do?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
