Scene to read · Empathy, Professionalism
Boxed by six
You are the newest assistant at a dental lab.
On a rush night at a dental lab, Alejandro, a veteran technician at the next bench, has nodded off twice beside the polishing lathe. He quietly told you he's been up every night caring for his sick father and can't lose tonight's overtime. Akiko, the lab manager, stops between your benches.
The scene
Akiko: Every case boxed for the six a.m. courier. Alejandro, the last eight crowns are yours.
Alejandro: Eight's fine. I need these hours, and I've never missed a courier.
Akiko: If anyone's too tired for the lathe, tell me now. You two share a bench. Is it making six?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Akiko and to Alejandro?
- 2When does covering for a struggling colleague stop being a kindness?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
