Scene to read · Empathy, Professionalism

Level, but not right

You adjust canes and walking frames at a mobility aid bench in a hospital's therapy department.

The bench runs on booked ten-minute slots. You have reset the height of Nestor's walking frame, and it now checks level on your test plate, but Nestor, who is 78, says it still feels off and his time is up. Yonatan, who supervises the bench from his wheelchair, comes over.

The scene

Nestor: Your test says it's level. It still feels wrong to me.

Yonatan: The next frame's in pieces, and her discharge transport leaves in fifteen minutes.

Nestor: My daughter drove me an hour. I'm not falling on my way out.

Yonatan: New frames feel strange at first. Your call, but she can't miss that ride.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Nestor and Yonatan?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to choose between giving one person more of your time and keeping your commitments to others.
