Scene to read · Empathy, Communication

One year left

You are helping your aunt price items at her driveway garage sale.

Your aunt Guadalupe was diagnosed last month with an illness that will need a year of treatment. Your cousin Deepika, who is in her final year of college four hours away, has just set a stack of her textbooks on the sale table.

The scene

Deepika: I'm selling them. I'm withdrawing and moving home. You can't do treatment alone, Mom.

Guadalupe: No. One year left. I didn't work two jobs for you to quit.

Deepika: I can go back later. I can't get this year with you back.

Guadalupe: It's my illness and my decision. Tell me you agree.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Deepika and Guadalupe?
  2. 2Tell us about a time two people you cared about each wanted you on their side. What did you do?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
