The flight's at eleven
You are on your apartment balcony at dusk, and your two close friends Hideo and Chiara are standing with you as Hideo asks you for a favor.
Hideo, 29, asks you to lend him eight hundred dollars for a flight home tonight; he says his brother is in a crisis but hasn't said what kind. Chiara, 31, a mutual friend, is with you both. Two years ago Hideo lost a lot of money betting on sports online, and you thought he had stopped.
The scene
Hideo: The flight's at eleven. Eight hundred, and I'll return it by the fifteenth.
Chiara: Hideo, I have to ask. Tuesday, the betting site was open on your laptop.
Hideo: That was ten dollars on one game. My brother needs me tonight.
Chiara: I'm sorry. I couldn't stay quiet.
Hideo: So, will you help me?
The two questions
- 1Would you lend Hideo the money? What would you say to him?
- 2Describe a time you wanted to help someone but were unsure your help would be good for them. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
