Written scenario · Empathy, Resilience
Forty years of giving
You volunteer at the refreshment desk of a blood donor clinic.
Femi, who is 70 and has donated for forty years, has just been told by a nurse that under the clinic's health rules he can no longer give; the rules protect donors as well as the people who receive donations. He stops at your desk, sets down his donor card and asks, half joking, what use he is now. The clinic badly needs volunteers for the job you are doing. You sense that offering it straight away might sound like a consolation prize, yet he may leave and never come back, and a line is forming behind him.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Femi?
- 2When someone is hurting, how do you decide between simply listening and offering them something practical to do?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
