Scene to read · Empathy, Professionalism
Nobody else to tell
You are the receptionist at a small veterinary clinic.
Mrs. Lindqvist's dog of fourteen years died last week. She has come in to settle the bill and is lingering at the desk, holding his collar. The waiting room is full, and Andre, a technician, comes up beside you.
The scene
Mrs. Lindqvist: He used to sit right there by the window. Fourteen years. The house is so quiet now.
Andre: We're forty minutes behind. People are waiting to check in.
Mrs. Lindqvist: I'm sorry. I'm keeping you. I just had nobody else to tell.
Andre: Your call. I can't run the desk for you.
The two questions
- 1What would you do?
- 2How do you give someone your full attention when other people are also waiting for you?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
