Scene to read · Empathy, Professionalism
Half a tablet
You are a first-time volunteer helper at a wiki edit-a-thon in a public library.
You are paired with Mei-ling, 74, who wants to add a line to the article about her heart medicine. The site allows only sourced information and never personal advice, because readers act on what they find. The organizer, Liesel, comes over from the next table.
The scene
Mei-ling: My pharmacy leaflet says they can be split. Halved, a bottle lasts double.
Liesel: A leaflet may count as a source. A savings tip still reads like advice.
Mei-ling: It's how I afford them on my pension. Others should know it's possible.
Liesel: It's borderline, honestly. You're editing together. I'll go with your call.
The two questions
- 1What would you decide about the edit, and what would you say to Mei-ling?
- 2Describe a time you had to say no to someone while still showing that you cared about their situation.
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
