Scene to read · Empathy, Ethics

Your turn to drive

You are on a family road trip and have been driving since morning.

At a gas station pump, your sister Saoirse has just quietly told you that she has been having panic spells on highways, and begged you not to tell your mother. She is due to drive next. Your mother, Min-ji, walks back to the minivan.

The scene

Min-ji: Saoirse, your turn. Three hours of highway, and we're there by dark.

Saoirse: Actually, I'm kind of tired. Maybe we keep the same driver?

Min-ji: After six hours? That's not fair or safe. And you promised to share the driving.

Saoirse: It's fine, right? You don't mind doing the rest, do you?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say and do at the pump?
  2. 2Tell us about a time someone asked you to keep something private and keeping it became difficult. What did you do?
