Scene to read · Empathy, Problem solving
His name on the invitations
You are the club volunteer who maintains the hiking club's online page, with authority to propose and make changes to it.
In her kitchen, a laptop open to the hiking club page, Seraphina, whose husband was a founding member, talks with Selwyn, the club admin. His profile still appears in event invitations, and newcomers keep messaging him. Both turn to you to propose a way forward.
The scene
Seraphina: His posts comfort me. I read them nightly. Leave his account alone.
Selwyn: I understand. But newcomers keep messaging him, confused when nobody answers.
Seraphina: Tell them he's gone. Don't remove the last place he still speaks.
Selwyn: We can't invite him hiking. You run the page. What now?
The two questions
- 1What would you propose to Seraphina and Selwyn, and why?
- 2How do you decide when a group's practical needs should change something that holds personal meaning for a member?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
