Scene to read · Empathy, Problem solving

Sheet music or recordings?

You are a choir member who sings beside Eder, and both leaders have asked for your view.

In a community hall, Ebrahim, the choir director, is preparing the winter concert. Eder, a beloved section leader, learns every part by ear and finds sheet music hard. Ebrahim wants everyone to learn from the score. You stand next to Eder in the tenor row.

The scene

Ebrahim: Eder, I want everyone learning from the score before the winter concert, no exceptions.

Eder: I know the parts cold from recordings. The page just slows me down.

Ebrahim: If I bend it for you, others will ask for the same.

Eder: Then you decide, because I'm not sure the score will work for me.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say or do in this situation, and why?
  2. 2How do you decide when treating people differently is fair, and when it is not?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
