Personal question · Empathy, Ethics

Piling on

It starts with one player's mistake in a gaming lobby, or one clumsy comment under a video, and within minutes a dozen strangers are taking turns. Stepping in can draw the crowd off, or hand it a second target.

The two questions

  1. 1Tell us about a time you saw someone being mocked or ganged up on in an online space. What did you do?
  2. 2Describe the way you weighed the risk of making things worse against staying silent, and what you imagine it was like for the person targeted.

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
