Scene to read · Empathy, Professionalism

Read it as written?

You are a patient adviser who relays written feedback from former patients to hospital staff.

In a quiet meeting room beside the patient relations office, you hold Mr. Kaplan's written complaint. Cillian Kaplan, 37, a former patient, sits across from Cerys Dube, 24, a check-in staff member. His note says she talked over him at check-in.

The scene

Cerys: I was keeping the line moving. Please don't make it worse.

Cillian: I'm not here to hurt anyone. I want check-in to feel different.

Cerys: If you read it exactly, I'll hear everything I did wrong.

Cillian: Then I came for nothing. Please read what I wrote, as written.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and why?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you had to give someone honest feedback that you knew might be hard for them to hear. How did you approach it?
