Scene to read · Empathy, Professionalism
Keep it between us
You welcome clients at a free tax-filing night.
Gurpreet, 79, who likes to chat with you while he waits, has beckoned you to the chairs by the window in the waiting room. He has just lowered his voice when Chidinma, the evening's coordinator, walks up from the front table, where new arrivals are stacking up. You know nothing about his nephew or how they manage his money.
The scene
Gurpreet: My nephew wants my refund in his account. He handles my bills. Between us, yes?
Chidinma: Sorry, I need you back at sign-in. Twenty people are waiting.
Gurpreet: Go, go. He's good to me, mostly. I shouldn't have said anything.
Chidinma: Gurpreet, you'll be called soon. And you, we need you up front now, please.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Gurpreet?
- 2Describe a time someone told you something in confidence that worried you. What did you do with it?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
