Scene to read · Empathy, Professionalism

Barely slept in weeks

You are spending the summer as an intern in a hospital's medical records office.

Halima, who runs the office and supervises you, has not been herself lately: three appointment letters she mailed this month gave patients mistaken dates, which you and Fadi, the other intern, spotted while filing. After the evening shift the three of you wait for the staff shuttle.

The scene

Halima: I'm sorry I snapped today. I've barely slept in weeks. That's not an excuse.

Fadi: We're worried about you. But those letters, I think your manager should hear.

Halima: She will, from me. Give me a week to recheck every one first.

Fadi: A week's a lot of appointments. I'd rather we said something tomorrow. You?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Halima and Fadi?
  2. 2Describe a time you were worried about how someone senior to you was coping. What did you do?
