Scene to read · Empathy, Motivation
Walking or wheeled to the ward
You are a volunteer guide at a hospital entrance, and both Belinda and Bayard have asked you to decide how the escort goes.
In the long corridor by the wheelchair stand, Belinda, a fellow volunteer, is escorting Bayard, a visitor, to a ward. Bayard walks slowly but steadily. Belinda has two more escorts waiting at the entrance. You are the guide in charge of assigning escorts, so the decision is yours.
The scene
Belinda: Bayard, sit down. The chair gets us there in five minutes.
Bayard: Thanks, Belinda, but I'll walk. Being wheeled makes me feel like luggage.
Belinda: I understand, Bayard. But two more visitors are waiting, and I'm behind.
Bayard: I'm slow, not helpless. I'll take my time. You two decide.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and why?
- 2Tell us about a time you had to balance someone's wish to do something their own way against a practical constraint.
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
