Written scenario · Empathy, Collaboration

Stop treating me as fragile

You are on an adult recreational basketball team.

Your friend Mei-ling is one of your teammates. Her father, who cheered from the bleachers most weeks and knew every one of you by name, died five days ago. In the group chat she wrote that Thursday should go ahead exactly as usual and that she will be there in uniform. Half of you would rather forfeit, out of respect: some doubt she means it, and some cannot imagine playing so soon themselves. Before warm-up she asks you, her voice unsteady, to tell the others as her friend to stop treating her as fragile. The undecided ones are waiting to hear from you.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Mei-ling, and what would you say to the team?
  2. 2Who should decide how a group responds when one of its members is grieving?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Collaboration
Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
