Scene to read · Empathy, Collaboration

No charge, fifth week

You work the window of a noodle truck with your coworker and friend, Fredrik.

For five weeks Fredrik has been handing a bowl, at no charge, to Dong, a laid-off machinist who used to buy from the truck every day. This morning the owner told you both that the stock does not add up and that she will go through the receipts tonight. At noon, Dong steps up to the window.

The scene

Dong: Afternoon, you two! Same again, if the chef's still generous. Got an interview Thursday.

Fredrik: Nice! One beef noodle coming up. Don't ring it up, okay? Just today.

Dong: I can pay, you know. Well. Next month I can.

Fredrik: Put that away. Come on, you're with me on this, right? It's one bowl.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do at the window, and what would you say to Fredrik?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to decide whether going along with someone's kindness was the right thing to do. What happened?
