Scene to read · Empathy, Equity

It's Lorraine

You are visiting your grandparents for the holiday.

Your cousin has gone out to pick up dessert, leaving his partner, Lorraine, on the living room sofa with you and your grandfather, Jagdeep, who is 84. It is her first visit, and he has called her Laura twice already.

The scene

Jagdeep: Laura, tell me again, where is your family really from? Before here, I mean.

Lorraine: It's Lorraine. And just Ohio, as far as anyone knows. Boring, I'm afraid.

Jagdeep: Everyone is from somewhere. When I came, people asked me every single day.

Lorraine: It's okay, really. Please don't make a fuss on my account.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do or say, and why?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to decide whether to speak up for someone who said they were fine. What did you do?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
