Until her shift ends
You staff the check-in window at an urgent care clinic.
It is a busy Saturday. Hassan is at the check-in window; his wife, who has a painful wrist, is resting in their car outside. Felipe, the shift lead, is beside you. The only female clinician on duty is fully booked until her shift ends at three.
The scene
Hassan: In our faith, a woman must examine her. Could she be fit in today?
Felipe: She's booked solid till she leaves at three. That bumps someone who waited.
Hassan: Her wrist is swelling. We can't come back tomorrow. I work.
Felipe: A male clinician's free right now, sir. Otherwise we bump somebody. Which is it?
The two questions
- 1How would you handle Hassan's request, and what would you say to him and to Felipe?
- 2When does treating people fairly mean treating them differently?
