Fifty copies
You are visiting your father, Desmond, who is about to host free English classes at home for immigrant neighbors.
At the kitchen table, beside the home printer, Desmond proudly shows you and your brother, Duc, the flyer he designed and plans to print tonight. Its clip art shows smiling cartoon figures in sombreros and conical hats.
The scene
Desmond: Rosa and the Nguyens next door saw it already. They laughed and asked for copies.
Duc: It's fun, Dad. Nobody's getting upset over a cartoon hat.
Desmond: Fifty copies tonight, then. They go up at the laundromat in the morning.
Duc: You've gone quiet over there. You don't think it's a problem, do you?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to your father and to Duc, if anything?
- 2When someone's well-meant work might land badly with others, how do you decide whether it is your place to say so?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
