Scene to read · Equity, Problem solving
Whose turn with the instructor?
You are a helper member at a climbing club, and the organizer and the volunteer instructor ask your view.
On the gym mezzanine before club night, organizer Cosima and volunteer instructor Cosimo, who gives one coaching hour each week, ask for your opinion. You help set up the sessions. They want a decision made tonight about how the hour runs.
The scene
Cosima: Same eager few fill your whole hour; quiet members drift back.
Cosimo: First-come keeps momentum; rotation slows climbers who are ready to progress.
Cosima: Quiet members watch and learn, but never get turns. Is that fair?
Cosimo: You help set up every week. Do we keep first-come, or rotate?
The two questions
- 1What would you recommend to Cosima and Cosimo about the instructor hour, and why?
- 2Tell us about a time you had to share limited time or attention among people who asked for it in different ways. What did you do?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
