The complex-return fee
You work at the intake desk of a small tax preparation office.
Dov, the owner, pays for a phone interpreter for clients who speak little English, and his fee sheet has only two tiers: simple and complex. He wants those clients quoted complex, even for simple filings. A client with limited English and a one-form return waits around the corner, out of earshot. Dov and your coworker Viktor have stepped over to your intake desk.
The scene
Dov: The interpreter line bills me forty dollars a call. Simple doesn't cover it.
Viktor: It's one wage form. But downtown charged her double last year.
Dov: Our sheet has two tiers. Eat that cost on everyone and we close by June.
Viktor: She trusts us now. What are you quoting her?
The two questions
- 1What fee would you quote, and what would you say to Dov?
- 2When a practice is permitted but seems unfair to one group of people, what should an employee do?
